The civic exam for French naturalisation (2026)

Since 1 January 2026, the civic exam is part of the naturalisation application. It checks your knowledge of the values, institutions, history and daily life of France.

Who must take this exam?

  • People applying for naturalisation by decree.
  • People applying for reinstatement of French nationality.
  • It is not required for nationality by declaration (for example through marriage).

The exam format

  • 40 multiple-choice questions, with 4 possible answers and only one correct.
  • 28 knowledge questions and 12 situational questions (mises en situation).
  • 45 minutes maximum, on a computer or tablet, in an approved centre.
  • You need 32 correct answers out of 40 (80%) to pass.
  • The exam is in French; you can retake it with no limit, and the pass certificate never expires.

What is specific to the naturalisation mention

  • The Ministry of the Interior publishes an official list of knowledge questions for naturalisation; it differs from the resident card and multi-year permit lists.
  • The French level required for naturalisation is B2: a separate condition from the civic exam.
  • A medical or disability exemption exists, with a medical certificate.
