The civic exam for the multi-year residence permit (CSP, 2026)

Since 1 January 2026, you must pass the civic exam to obtain a first multi-year residence permit. It covers values, institutions, rights and duties, history and daily life in France.

Who must take this exam?

  • People applying for a first multi-year residence permit (carte de séjour pluriannuelle).
  • It is not required for a renewal, or for the one-year temporary residence permit.
  • Exemptions include people over 65 and people whose disability or health makes the exam impossible (with a medical certificate).

The exam format

  • 40 multiple-choice questions, with 4 possible answers and only one correct.
  • 28 knowledge questions and 12 situational questions (mises en situation).
  • 45 minutes maximum, on a computer or tablet, in an approved centre.
  • You need 32 correct answers out of 40 (80%) to pass.
  • The exam is in French; you can retake it with no limit, and the pass certificate never expires.

What is specific to the multi-year permit mention

  • The Ministry of the Interior publishes an official list of knowledge questions specific to the multi-year residence permit.
  • If you have already passed with the resident card mention, that pass also counts for the multi-year permit.
  • The French level required for the multi-year permit is A2: a separate condition from the civic exam.
