Renewing a residence permit: do you need the civic exam?
It is one of the most asked questions since January 2026: "I need to renew my card, do I have to take the civic exam?" The short answer: no, not for a renewal.
What the rule says
The civic exam is required for a first application for:
- a multi-year residence permit;
- a resident card;
- naturalisation.
According to service-public.fr, renewals are not subject to the exam.
Concrete examples
- You renew your multi-year permit: no civic exam.
- You move from a one-year temporary permit to a first multi-year permit: it is a first multi-year application, so the exam is required (unless exempt).
- You hold a multi-year permit and apply for a first resident card: the exam is required, with the resident card mention.
- You renew your resident card: no civic exam.
A tip if you are aiming for the resident card
A pass with the resident card mention also counts for the multi-year permit, according to the Ministry of the Interior. And the pass certificate never expires: you keep it for later applications.
If in doubt
Each situation depends on the exact permit. Check with your prefecture or on service-public.fr before submitting your application.
