You need 32 correct answers out of 40 to pass the civic exam. The bar is high, and failing is not unusual. The good news: it is not final.

Can you retake the civic exam?

Yes. You can retake it at any time and as many times as you need. There is no mandatory waiting period and no maximum number of attempts. Just register again with an approved centre under the same mention.

The one exception: fraud or attempted fraud means a 2-year ban.

Should you retake it straight away?

Every attempt costs money. Rather than rebooking the next day, take a few days or weeks to fill your gaps. A pass gives you a certificate that never expires, so passing a little later beats failing twice.

How to pass next time

  1. Find your weak themes. The 40 questions cover five themes: principles and values of the Republic, institutional and political system, rights and duties, history-geography-culture, and living in French society. Where did you hesitate?
  2. Revise with official sources. The Ministry of the Interior publishes the official list of knowledge questions for free on formation-civique.interieur.gouv.fr, along with theme sheets.
  3. Work on the situational questions. They are 12 of the 40. See our 4-step method.
  4. Practice under real conditions. Take 40-question mock exams in 45 minutes until you regularly clear 32/40 with a margin.

Take action

Start with a free test to measure your current level, then focus your revision on the themes where you lose points.
