The 5 Themes of the French Civic Exam, Explained
Why the themes matter
The 40 questions in the civic exam are not random: they are spread across five official themes. Knowing the weight of each one helps you prioritise your revision.
1. Principles and values of the Republic (11 questions)
Secularism (laïcité), the motto "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity", the symbols of the Republic and the core principles of shared life.
2. Rights and duties (11 questions)
Fundamental rights, but also the duties of citizens and residents: respect for the law, institutions and shared values.
3. History, geography and culture (8 questions)
Key dates, regions, heritage and cultural landmarks of France.
4. Institutional and political system (6 questions)
The role of the President, Parliament and Government, and how powers are organised.
5. Living in French society (4 questions)
Everyday essentials: health, school, work and public services.
Revise theme by theme
The most effective method is to work one theme at a time, with an explanation for every answer. Practise free, by theme, and track your progress.
