French Civic Exam 2026: Official Format, Pass Mark and How It Works
A now-mandatory exam
Since 1 January 2026, the civic exam is required to apply for French naturalization, as well as for the resident card and the multi-year residence permit. It tests your knowledge of the values, history and institutions of the Republic.

- 40 questions in total: 28 knowledge questions (multiple choice) and 12 situational questions.
- Pass mark: 80% — that is 32 correct answers out of 40.
- Three "mentions" depending on your application: multi-year residence permit, resident card or naturalization.
- A test of 45 minutes maximum, on a computer or tablet, in an approved centre.
How the questions break down
The 40 questions are spread across five official themes:
- Principles and values of the Republic — 11 questions
- Rights and duties — 11 questions
- History, geography and culture — 8 questions
- Institutional and political system — 6 questions
- Living in French society — 4 questions
